The Haven: Providing more than a bed to the homeless

THE HAVEN SPOKESPERSON

WE offer more than a bed. We exist to help him end his homelessness. Our pre-audit figures show that of the 1 411 clients with personal development plans who exited, 507 were reintegrated.

Who are Haven clients?

The Haven accepts any homeless adult irrespective of race, religion, creed, class or sexual orientation. About 15% of Haven clients need help with addiction problems, 9% are struggling with mental illness and 11% are physically challenged. Meanwhile, 29% of Haven clients need prescribed medication for which we provide safe storage and a reminder service if required.

Reaching out to families

After losing his job due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Mr T found himself living on the streets of Newlands. He wanted to go home and approached The Haven Claremont for assistance. The social work auxiliary contacted his family and within 48 hours his sister came to fetch him. Mr T was successfully reunited with his family, and we wish him well.

Ms D arrived at The Haven Napier Street after walking away from an abusive relationship that she had endured for more than five years. All she wanted was to reunite with her family, who she had not spoken to for 15 years. The social worker managed to trace Ms D’s family. After she attended sessions at the trauma centre, she was able to go home to her sister.

Mr W had left home due to family conflict and ended up at Haven Mossel Bay. During one-on-one sessions with the social worker, he was empowered to reach out and mend fences with his family. Less than a month after arriving at the shelter, Mr W was happily reunited with his family.

Together we can help him end his homelessness. Please support reintegration; refer the homeless to shelters.
