I REFER to the article “Plight of circus animals highlighted as activists take a stand” (Cape Times, August17).

Three cheers to the Ban Animal Trading SA organisation, as well as Four Paws, for once again highlighting the plight of wild animals used as entertainment in circuses.

It is well documented that wild animals in circuses are often beaten, shocked, kicked, starved or cruelly confined in order to train them to be obedient and perform so-called (unnatural) tricks.

It is also believed that many such animals are drugged during performances so that they lose their wildness and their desire to attack or defend themselves.

Many circus animals become dysfunctional, unhealthy, depressed and/ or aggressive as a result of the unnatural and unrelenting confinement in which they are kept.

What a sad scenario that we continue with this outdated concept in these enlightened times.

The use of wild animals in circuses should not even be debated, but should be banned with immediate effect.

Is Minister Barbara Creecy taking note?
